Chronological history of the extinction of the cheetah

Summary

This map depicts the chronological locations of sighting or other records of the Indian Cheetah as reported in Divyabhanusinh Chavda's book 'End of a Trail'.

Description

The Indian cheetah has been extinct from the Indian sub-continent since 1952. The records on the occurrence and abundance of this species are well documented in the book, 'End of a Trail', where the author examines the pre-history and human interactions of the cheetah, and possible conditions and practices that led to its extinction. The map here shows the record type, and its actual reference from the book along with the date of the record, thus creating a chronological history of the extinction.

Methodology of data generation

The spatial locations for the records from the book were noted and identified on a map of India. These were then converted to a GIS format and the details for each record were added.
