Life Stage (Complete Metamorphosis)

A stage in the life cycle of the organism. Immature stages are called larvae, and differ markedly from adults. Insects which undergo complete metamorphosis pass through a larval stage, then enter an inactive state called pupa, and finally emerge as adults. This applies to Coleoptera – Beetles; Diptera – Flies; Hymenoptera – Ants, bees, sawflies and wasps; Lepidoptera – Butterflies and moths; Mecoptera – Scorpionflies; Megaloptera – Alderflies, dobsonflies and fishflies; Neuroptera – Lacewings, antlions, etc.; Raphidioptera – Snakeflies; Siphonaptera – Fleas; Strepsiptera – Twisted-winged parasites and Trichoptera – Caddisflies
